Preventive dentistry is designed to help you keep your natural teeth and undergo fewer dental treatments. The better care you take to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, the greater your chances are to maintaining your natural teeth throughout your entire life.
Can everybody benefit from preventive dentistry?
Preventive dentistry can benefit anyone! While preventive care is helps patients to maintain their own teeth, it also benefits patients without teeth, as conditions such as oral cancer and denture stomatitis can be diagnosed during routine visits with your dentist and quickly treated. Our dental team will work with you to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy. We may recommend a specific course of treatment and a maintenance plan to help you achieve and maintain good oral health.
What is involved?
When you visit our practice for preventive dental care, our team will check your teeth and gums, and discuss any treatments you may need with you. During your appointment, we will:
- Thoroughly clean your teeth, removing gall plaque and tartar (a process known as “scaling and polishing”).
- Discuss your at-home dental hygiene routine, and if necessary show you better ways to brush and clean between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss.
- Recommend oral care products for your use.
- Discuss your diet, as well as any other habits you may have that affect your oral health, such as smoking and drinking.
- Check that any existing fillings or other restorations are in good condition.
We recommend that you visit our practice every six months to receive regular preventive care.
